Over the summer I decided it was time to get a new mascara. Having fair eyelashes, I wear mascara every day.  It makes you look brighter and more awake and defines and lengthens your eyelashes, all of which I love. It’s a central part of my daily make-up routine. I was, however, in a rut. I’d been using the same one for years. This all changed when Space NK sent a box of samples with my purchase; my head was turned and my quest to find the perfect new mascara began. I tried a LOT of mascaras and a surprising winner emerged. Surprising, as it isn’t one of the big brands or stocked by Space NK!

From trying so many mascaras, I realised there’s actually a huge number of factors that have to combine to make a great mascara. The majority of the formulations hit some, but not all of these requirements. The most basic ones are no flaking, no transference, no irritation and no clumping. I hate mascara clots! I apply mascara hurriedly first thing in the morning so it also has to be easy to use. So many of the latest mascaras have unique brushes suited to their formulations, but these don’t really work when you have no time to think about its application. Curved brushes are a nice idea, but not ideal for hassle free, full-proof application! Also, as I find a quick press of my eyelash curlers to be pretty transformative, the mascara covered lashes have to hold a curl. In addition to all of this, the mascara also has to last the whole day and be buildable. After a light application in the morning, I’ll almost certainly want to add more later in the day. Again, not as many ticked this box as you might imagine. Finally, at the end of the day, it has to be easy to remove. Only one truly remarkable mascara ticked all of these boxes and more.
