A night at The Savoy with Sarah Jessica Parker

I’ve got to be honest and say, I’m not massively keen on the theatre. I’ve had some pleasant experiences watching musicals and the like, but some not so good ones too. I generally opt for concerts or the cinema, given the choice. I had one incredible theatre experience in 2014, watching Chris O’dowd in Broadway’s Of Mice and Men. Truly captivating. I haven’t had another theatre visit come close until March this year. Possibly because I’ve really not given the theatre much of a chance.

After quite considerable planning, as is the case when you leave your children for the night, my husband and I headed to The Savoy in London to watch Plaza Suite with Sarah Jessica Parker and Mathew Broderick. Such planning to go the theatre, for a non-theatre go-er was only down to the opportunity to see one of my all-time favourites, in my favourite city! The iconic Sarah Jessica Parker, the embodiment of all my fashion and lifestyle fantasies and London! What was not to love about any of this? I was doubly keen, having serendipitously bumped into SJP and Mathew, no less, in The Wolseley a few weeks earlier. Enjoying a post-show drink, they could not have been more lovely to two star struck mid-lifers! That is me, and a best friend from school. I’ve also got to say, SJP is even prettier in real life than on screen.

Back to the glitz of the Savoy and it’s art deco splendour which perfectly complimented the glamour of the real star. Sorry Mathew, but in my biased opinion, your wife has the edge!  It was also very Sex and the City to be in a theatre so stacked to bursting with champagne. I’m not sure there was another drink on sale. It was perfect! A night of indulgence and an incredible performance. We were transported to The Plaza in New York for the evening as the pair acted out the roles of three couples in what was accurately billed as ‘one perfect evening of comedy’.

An entirely flawless performance and an unforgettable experience, which has remined me to be more open minded generally, as well as to the fantasy of theatre. It’s actually quite magical and life affirming to watch such talented performers right in front of you. I’ve discovered a love for the theatre I wouldn’t have realised, had I not taken the opportunity to head to the Savoy when it presented itself. A real reminder to live in the moment and not to be closed to anything, even if you’ve previously written it off!  It could still bring you joy, fun and a little fantasy, which we all need every once in a while!
